Coach nils shares his reflections from Cascade Cup
“Congratulations Cascade Cup Attendees! We had such a great weekend at Crystal Mountain Resort!
I would have to say I was very happy and impressed with the performance of our athletes this weekend. Every single athlete pushed themselves to be better every run throughout the whole event. The runs were steep and challenging and all of the athletes brought their “A” game. Kids powered through fog, drizzle, heavy snow, bright sunshine that made the course variable and challenging. I saw this as a big triumph in the journey of learning about ski racing and about life.
Despite a couple binding blow-outs on first runs, kids redeemed themselves on their second run. All of them did very well to dig deep and focus on adjusting their attitudes in order to make the second run count for themselves, not anyone else. I was impressed that athletes with mishaps could turn from the negative and make a positive experience out of it. In addition to our performance challenges we had some great triumphs too. Zac Holton made the top ten both Saturday and Sunday and Campbell had 9th fastest time in the GS on Saturday! The rest of the kids were very competitive to hang with the middle of the field or better on both days, which I am very proud of.
In my eyes we were triumphant as a team and as a group of individuals working toward our goals to become better skiers and better ski racers. Ski racing is hard sometimes, I’m glad all the athletes realized that they performed their best throughout the whole weekend and that’s more than any of us could ever ask for no matter what happens on the podium. This year’s Cascade Cup was a great stepping stone to the future. Keep on working hard and believing in yourselves and much will come out of this experience. I had a great time with all of you and look forward to more good times with you in the years to come.
It was such a fun weekend – You guys are awesome!!!
Parents – Thank you so much for all of your help over the weekend.
Holly, Sara, and I couldn’t have done it without you!” ~ Coach Nils
