Despite the low snow in the Pacific Northwest, there has been a flurry of race activity this week for Stevens Pass Alpine Club Athletes. We had a great showing last weekend where big efforts paid dividends at Crystal’s Last Call GS and at Bantam Cup at White Pass.
This annual and historic event for U8-U14 is one of the spring classics in PNSA. Saturday a little wet, wind, new snow and blowing uphill did not stop the Pacific Northwest crowd. Sunday clear skies and a warm summer day made for a fun last race of the regular season for many. Low snow forced the race venue to move to the upper part of the mountain, and local coaches and crew salted the race hill Friday, Saturday and Sunday creating hard and fair race conditions for all.
While Emma Ireton (TAS) and Ryan Kershaw (WPSC) were the overall winners, we all felt like we won a little bit of something (and took home many medals). SPAC represented well with 14 racers in a field of 80+; A big congrats to all our athletes who gave it 100% effort each day. Congratulations to Wynter Cohen, Parker Tichy, Tatum Von Melville, Erica Debley and Maya Stocking for multiple trips to the podium. It’s so great to see our efforts paying off!
A big thanks goes to Coach Heidi and Martin for putting in a huge effort. Despite the light coaching staff, these two made sure that every single athlete was given focused individual feedback after every run. “Just like coaching players at halftime”, one of our parents commented. Possibly the only glitch of the weekend came when a mix-up initially omitted Maya from the awards podium; a very supportive crowd quickly addressed the oversight with true SPAC spirit and sportsmanship and all U14 ladies got back on the podium together. In one word, “awesome” was how we could summarize a weekend that proved to not only be great skiing, great fun and good friends.
Last Call GS
For the juniors the Last Call GS at Crystal Mountain was great racing, and even better preparation keeping the kids sharp for the upcoming NW Cup/U16 Finals/EC Open at Mission Ridge. The athletes improved every run. Their performance translated to getting results, as well as improving their seed points. Kris Westman won the U16 men both days, and was also 5th overall both days. Tyler Larson won the U14 men Sunday, was 8th overall. Greg Gibbons finished 10th on Sunday, and Andrew Folta 13th, to place four SPAC athletes in the top 15. Well done! Special thanks to CMAC for hosting this race on short notice, giving PNSA U14 and older athletes another chance to race, as our GS scheduled this past weekend was forced to be cancelled. A big thanks to Coach Dave for his efforts with the kids.
Thank you to all the parents and racers for their great attitudes and work, not just this weekend, but throughout the season. See you on the slopes again soon.
