Wow! Have we been busy at SPAC these last few weeks OR WHAT!? My apologies, your intrepid web administrator is a bit behind in these posts, so bear with me while I jam a lot into this one.

We had a fabulous Christmas Camp and very successful first SPAC sponsored race – a foggy but fun Night Slalom. See below for some fun pictures taken of camp (thanks Jakub). Thanks to all the athletes coaches and volunteers who made it out for the Night Slalom. We had an excellent showing and put on a great race. Congrats to all the juniors who attended the first NW Cup race at Schweitzer last weekend. We had a strong week three of training where you could find our athletes on every steep and bumpy pitch on the mountain. Thanks to Coach Bre for sharing a recap of training from last weekend. And then last but not least, following Coach Bre’s highlights, some lodging info for the very popular and fun Wolf Chase at Loup Loup, the second Mighty Mite away race on 2/6 +7.

A note from Coach Bre

The athletes were all back in action this week as we kicked off the new year wishing the Juniors good luck at NW Cup #1 and charging through to our first weekend back after the Holiday Break. It was great to see everyone pick back up right where they left off, and them some!

The changes and improvements made from our first few weeks were noticeable, and the attitudes and efforts only help in the continued improvement every weekend. With a longer dry and cool spell, the snow was firm and the weather a bit chilly. This worked very well with a focus of line and tactics to guide our groups in exploring terrain to help us with these skills. Many groups could be found on any and all terrain layered with massive moguls, particularly on the back side.

You may be asking yourself, what does skiing moguls have to do with Ski Racing?

Moguls are fun yes, but when we are exploring with the athletes it also presents a great opportunity to practice line and tactics. Much like being in the course, we want to practice looking ahead, picking a line and staying out of the rut. As we worked our way into the gates for afternoon training, the hard work of everyone was evident as athletes were able to translate movements made outside the course, into race training and make improvements from run to run.

Keep up the hard work everyone!

– Coach Bre

It has also been a tradition for SPAC-ers and family to gather and break bread — literally, at The Breadline Cafe — on the Friday before Wolf Chase. If you’re family has the intentions of joining us, please let Summer Oleksy know via email so she can get a head count. This dinner is Friday, February 5 at 6 p.m. in downtown Omak.
Thanks, Summer for organizing. New families this is a very fun social race. Plan to bring a camp chair for the cheering section at the bottom of the course. And maybe if we are lucky we can convince Tom Carlson to bring his grill so we can roast a few hot dogs again.
Here’s a sampling of a few images from camp etc. I will send a separate email to the roster list with links to download all of the pictures. Jakub thinks he managed to shoot quite a few of our athletes. Thanks again Jakub for sharing your skills.
