David Lyon grew-up skiing and ski racing in the Pacific Northwest.  From the early 1960’s, his parents owned and operated an independent ski school at Steven’s Pass.  His mom was a member of the Canadian National Alpine Ski Team in her youth, so David began skiing by age 3, racing by age 5 and began instructing lessons and training staff, while still in high school.

As a junior racer David trained under the direction of his mom Jean Lyon, as a member of the Lyon Racing Club (Ski Vite).  Upon graduating from high school in 1981, David was recruited to race with the Bogus Basin Ski Racing Alliance.  During his tenure there he was named the Inter-Mountain Cup Champion and was a 2-time Northwest Cup Overall Champion.

In 1984, David joined the NCAA #1 ranked University of Wyoming Ski Team.  While racing for the University of Wyoming, David was named NCAA All-American in 1985, 86 and 87.  He was Rocky Mountain Overall Champion twice.

In 1985, he was named to the U.S. Ski Team where he was ranked 5th nationally in slalom and 15th nationally in giant slalom.

At the end of Dave’s tenure with the University of Wyoming he served as coach of the University’s development team. In 2012 Dave was inducted into the University of Wyoming Athletic Hall of Fame for his contributions to the championship team during his freshman season.

Upon leaving the University of Wyoming, David raced on the pro-tour until his retirement in 1990.  After retirement, Dave moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and began a career in Ski Retail Management.  It was during that time that Dave renewed his relationship with past Ski Team members, Hank Kashiwa and David Currier.  Dave was recruited to join the Volant, Inc. sales team and moved back to the Seattle area and became owner/director of Lyon Ski School, Inc.

In 2000, Dave started the Team Lyon Alpine Race Club.  The team grew and flourished for 10+ years until in 2011 when the team merged with Stevens Pass Alpine Club; Dave serving as Program Director and Head-Coach for the newly merged club.

Currently, continues his tenure as Program Director and Head Coach of SPAC while living in Woodinville, Washington with his wife and two sons.  He is serving his 5th term as a member of PSIA’s elite National Demonstration Team.   In his free-time Dave leads ski and ski racing clinics and summer camps throughout the U.S., he is the Education chair and member of the ACC for PNSA.  He works for the United States Ski and Snowboard Association as a clinician and certification examiner for alpine race coaches and most recently, he has been spending time working with US Ski Team athletes and coaches on a number of special projects.
