That’s A Wrap! 2020-2021 Season Recap

Thank you to everyone who made the 2020-2021 SPAC ski race season a success!  When we started this season in the midst of a pandemic we weren’t sure if we could train, how long it would last, or whether there would be any races.  Thanks to a tremendous effort by our coaches, board members and especially our racers and parents, we were able to maintain our program and keep our ski family safe.

Preseason was marked with online workouts and our juniors developed their own core values.  It was a great way to start the season, even if not in person.  Once on the hill, our coaches stepped up and focused on fundamental skills right out of the gate (pun intended!). The racers then progress to training gates and continued to improve and develop their abilities to get down the hill fast! Mother Nature also delt Stevens Pass and the rest of the Northwest record amounts of snowfall this year, leaving a massive snow pack on the hill for us to play in.  But most importantly, each and every athlete found something new in their skiing and the results could be seen on the smiles and the fun they were having during training.

After months of waiting our racers were finally able to race as Covid restrictions relaxed.

  • Mighty Mights enjoyed racing Wild Katz at Stevens Pass, Squirrel Cup at Mission Ridge and the U12 Buddy Werner Regional Championships at Stevens Pass
  • Juniors traveled to Spokane (Northwest Cup #1), Schweitzer (NWC #2), Mission Ridge (Evergreen Cup #2), Crystal (NWC #3), Mt. Hood(EC Finals) & Mt. Bachelor(NWC Finals)
  • FIS racers competed at Schweitzer, Mission Ridge and Squaw Valley

Our Juniors ended the season at Mt. Bachelor competing at the NW Cup Finals on some of the longest races of the season; 63 gates in the slalom! 8 men and 11 women represented SPAC on the mountain, including 3 U14’s who received a special invitation to compete based on stellar results at the Evergreen Cup Finals in early April.  And it’s not over yet!  Some Juniors are planning to be back at Mt. Hood for Golden Rose on Memorial Day weekend.  Congratulations to all our racers for their accomplishments this season.

Thanks to everyone for being diligent to ensure that we protected ourselves from Covid and yet were able to make the most of this amazing season.  And a special Thank You to the staff at Stevens Pass who kept the mountain safe, the lifts operating and the runs groomed (especially I-5).
